Heated Debate on Irish Drama Held in SHNU Foreign Languages College

SHNU: On May 5, the SHNU Foreign Languages College (FLC) held a debate as a part of the Irish Month activities to arouse students’ interest in Irish dramas.

The debate was about a decision made by a character in one of the Irish Dramas called The Rising of the Moon written by Lady Gregory. The debate began at noon and six debaters from FLC took part in it. Vice Deans of FLC Prof. Jin Hui and Prof. Wu Cheng, Prof. Su Chengzhi, Prof. Bu Yonghong, and Prof. Pu Durong acted as judges of the debate.

The one-hour debate began with introduction of the drama to all the students present. The debate went on heatedly as students from both the proposition side and the opposition side prepared fully for the debate. Jin Hui announced the result of the debate that the proposition side was the winner.

After the debate, many students said that such kind of activities benefited them a lot for not only their English ability were improved, but also they got to know better the Irish culture. Actually the Irish Month has been on for a week and many activities including lectures by professors and recitation competitions have been successfully held.

In the following week, there will also be other activities like Irish dance teaching, Irish songs singing contest and so on. Students will also have their debut performance of the Irish dramas next Wednesday.
