15 Mar 2011

SHNU:An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit north-east coast of Japan at 1:46 p.m. on March 11, triggering a ferocious tsunami and causing extensive damage and loss in different areas.

In the afternoon, all the relevant departments of SHNU took immediate action—they contacted with teachers and students in Japan and showed special concern for Japanese students in the university.

Only two hours after the quake, the International Exchange Division contacted Shi Yongda, the Chinese Dean of Confucius Institute in Fukuyama University; Wang Shengyuan, a visiting scholar from the Foreign Languages College of SHNU in Tokyo University; Zhang Wei a teacher dispatched by SHNU International College of Chinese Studies to Fukui University. They were all confirmed safe.

At present, altogether 9 SHUN undergraduate students and 1 graduate student are studying in Japan, On 11th March, the Department of Student Affairs got in touch with these students and their safety were affirmed. Besides, the university is ready to give psychological intervention to Japanese teachers and students in SHUN.

There are more than 60 Japanese students studying in SHNU, but only 3 students’ homes are located in the heavily stricken Miyagi prefectures. They have received particular concern from the university.

All that reflects SHNU’s longstanding care and high sense of responsibility for its faculties and students.
