Elizabeth Truss MP Visits SHNU

SHNU: On February 24th, Elizabeth Truss, Parliament Under-Secretary of State for Education and Childcare, Department of Education led a delegation to visit SHNU with 2 others from Department of Culture and Education of British Embassy in China. They were received by SHNU president Zhang Minxuan.

The delegation aimed at understanding the support of SHNU on Shanghai middle and primary schools education, the experience of Shanghai on math education and reasons for Shanghai students’ excellent in PISA.

SHNU President Zhang Minxuan mentioned in the conference the status of Shanghai education, especially that of math, the importance of teacher training in relation to the economic conditions of the city and how basic education paves the way for higher education. By introducing the situations of China, Zhang expressed the possibility of Shanghai to obtain experience of addressing the problems of shortage of teachers by learning from the UK. He also pointed out that it is not appropriate for students to resort to rote learning to acquire a hundred percent of all the math questions correctly, but just 95 percent would be enough, since the time spent for the last 5 percent obviously takes much longer time. Instead, students could be encouraged to develop their creativity, potential talents and other talents, etc.
In the latter part of the meeting, Zhang replied the questions raised by the visitors, concerning the plans of basic education, etc.
Also present are various scholars of basic education research field, and journalist from different media of Shanghai.
