22 Apr 2013

On April the 20th, an international academic symposium entitled “Robert Van Gulik and Chinese Culture” was held in SHNU. The symposium was jointly organized by SHNU’s key discipline—Comparative Literature and World Literature, the Netherlands Consulate in Shanghai and the Committee of “ROBERT VAN GULIK NOW!”

ROBERT VAN GULIK was a famous Dutch scholar, novelist and diplomat. He devoted his whole life to exploring a wide range of Chinese philosophy, literature, arts and many other areas; and he was especially interested in the study of ancient Chinese music instruments, gibbons and ancient culture. His innovation, systematic method and uniqueness aroused widespread concern in academic circles both at home and abroad. He combined the merits of the western and Chinese detective novels, and created series of novels called Judge Dee which were popular among readers all over the world.

This conference was hosted by the famous Sinologist and former department head of the Harvard’s Eastern Asia Language and Civilization College—Professor Idema. Mr. Mao Xuncheng, assistant to SHNU President, Po Peide, Netherlands Consul General, and other SHNU leaders made speeches at the meeting. The daughter of Robert Van Gulik, Miss Gao Baolin, also came to congratulate the convening of this conference. Scholars from the United States, the Netherlands, Taiwan, China and other countries and regions shared with others their research experience of Robert van Gulik during this symposium. A wide and heated discussion was also held about the influence of Robert Van Gulik’s works on the contemporary Chinese culture.(Translated by Yang Weiye)
