SHNU: On June 13, the Workshop of Irish Literature of SHNU Foreign Languages was held in SHNU to commemorate the 150th birthday of William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), one of the greatest poets of the 20th century.
The opening ceremony of the salon was attended by Jin Hui, Vice Dean of SHNU Foreign Languages College, Mr. Abdi Hassan, representative of the ambassadors of Irish consulate general in Shanghai, Prof. Wang Zhanpeng, Director of Ireland Research Center of Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Prof. Liu Yunhua, head of SHNU key discipline Comparative Literature and World Literature. Experts and scholars presented their own views about Yeats’ poems and dramatic works at the ensuing discussion meeting.
Associate Professor Pu Durong introduced the significance of commemorating Yeats and the construction of the Irish Literature Workshop. Pu pointed out that Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. He was both the leader of the Irish Dramatic Movement and a cultural card for Ireland.
Students performed the play of Yeats The Land of Heart’s Desire and sang his poem Down by the Salley Gardens, the wonderful performance of whom was the best memory of Yeats.
