World-renowned Astronomer Prof. Sandra Faber Visits SHNU

SHNU: The other day, Prof. Sandra Faber, academician of 3 US academies (National Academy of Sciences, American Philosophical Society and American Humanity and Science Academy) and outstanding astronomer in the field of Galaxy Evolution and Cosmology, was invited to SHNU.

   SHNU President Zhu Ziqiang cordially received the guests and introduced SHNU’s history, school-running features, disciplinary advantages and internationalization. As a representative of UC (the University of California) Santa Cruz, Prof. Faber had an in-depth conversation with President Zhu on possible cooperation and exchanges between the two parties and reached an initial cooperative intention.

Prof. Faber made an academic report to research staff of SHNU key labs and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as well as the teachers and students in the SHNU Department of Physics. The report was entitled Galaxy Evolution after z = 2.5 with the CANDELS Survey on Hubble and the Thirty-Meter Telescope.

Having earned a doctoral degree in Astrophysics from Harvard and a lot of honorary titles in recent years, Prof. Faber is one of the three astronomers who diagnosed and repaired the defects of optical image of Hubble Telescope. She is now the key figure in CANDLES—the biggest sky survey program ever of the Hubble Telescope.
