Professor from Saint Joseph College Lectures at Xuesihu Overseas Masters’ Forum

SHNU: On March 15, Prof. Kenneth Joseph Long, Chair of the History and Political Science Department at College of Saint Joseph College  in USA, delivered a lecture at the Xuesihu International Scholars’ Forum at the invitation of SHNU.

In his welcome speech before the lecture, SHNU Vice President Lu Jianfei expressed his warm welcome to Prof. Long and presented some special gifts to him. Students from SHNU School of Marxism attended the lecture.

In his lecture entitled American’s Views of Marx in the Current Economic Downturn; Assessing Socialisms Both Real and Imagined, Prof. Long introduced the economic downturn starting from 2008. He used Michel Foucault’s theory to analyze the power and economic corollary.

Prof. Long said he was a socialist，not a Marxist, though approved of some aspects of Marxist economic ideology. He expected that America should change in the near future but was not sure that the change would cause a downturn again or would bring the United States more wealth. But such a change is necessary in the States. He was quite certain that in the near future, more and more socialists would appear in this country.

After the lecture, Prof. Long answered the questions put forth by the students.  He differentiated between Marxism and socialism and explained the possibility of financial crisis in the socialist states.

The next day, professors from Saint Joseph College had an academic discussion with teachers and students in SHNU School of Marxism. The topic of the discussion was The Education in Patriotism and Innovative Spirit between USA and China.
