Foreign Teachers and Students of SHNU Gather To Welcome Christmas

About 50 foreign teachers and 70 international or exchange students from 26 countries enjoyed a wonderful Christmas party in Taoliju Restaurant of SHNU on December 22, just two days before Christmas.

The party began at 6 p.m. SHNU President Li Jin proposed toasts at the beginning of the party. Vice President Lu Jianfei remarked on the work of international exchanges and cooperation of SHNU in the past year.

The guests present had a grand buffet dinner, during which both foreign and Chinese students staged various performances including Taiji (traditional Chinese kongfu), Guzheng (a 21-or 25-stringed plucked Chinese musical instrument) and Russian folk dances. Foreign teachers from EF Center also gave wonderful performances.

The party lasted for about 2 hours and wound up with many guests receiving gifts from the “Santa Claus”. Everyone had a good time.

Year 2010 is of particular significance to Shanghai. The city has attracted the world’s attention during the 184 days when the World Expo was held. This extraordinary year has also witnessed the prosperity of the international exchanges and cooperation of SHNU.

  Up to December 20, the population of foreign students has accelerated to around 2,017 for the fifth year representing 57 countries. SHNU has signed agreements with over 210 universities and organizations in more than 35 countries and regions, including the new and renewed with 40 universities and institutions.

There are 80 long-term foreign faculty members teaching in different colleges, affiliated high schools and partner institutions (e.g. EF English First, Cambridge International Center, Tianhua College). 55 short-term foreign experts have come to visit for academic purposes. 298 staff and faculty members have been sent abroad for visits for various types. Over 300 faculty members and administrative personnel have been involved in international exchanges and academic visits overseas.

SHNU has received over 100 visitors from Taiwan and Hong Kong and meanwhile has sent 41 staff and faculty members to Taiwan on academic visits. The university has also enrolled 35 students from Tai Wan, Hong Kong, Macau, etc.

This year SHNU ahs sent 342 students for academic studies or social practice in 54 universities and institutions in 13 different countries or regions. Another 130 students have been sent abroad for short-term exchanges, art performances, cultural experiences or internships. 310 students have completed or have been engaging in Master degree or Doctoral degree programs abroad.

Under the influence of the World Expo, there has been an increase of 70% in visiting delegations. 205 groups of 1025 delegates from 161 universities and organizations from 29 countries have come to visit. Over 130 international students have been awarded scholarships of different levels from the Chinese Government, the confucius institutes, and Shanghai Municipal Government.

The two confucius institutes in Japan and Botswana have been functioning smoothly. The third Confucius Institute in University of Missori, USA is to be set up in next March.

This year SHNU has been selected into the “China-Africa 20+20 Universities Cooperative Scheme”.

Futher, SHNU has been actively involved in communication with international academia. “The International Scholars’ Forum” has staged over 30 renowned experts and scholars from 9 countries. SHNU has hosted 13 conferences and seminars with attendees from overseas or Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao, which turn out to be most fruitful and influential in different areas.
