On November 8th, the Environment and Geographic Sciences Conference was held and SHNU Vice President Zhang Zhengrong signed a cooperative agreement with Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IUE, CAS), and Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences (SAES).
It is decided at the conference that further cooperation with SHNU would concern resources environment, urban ecology, urban health welfare, particularly in Shanghai and the Yangtze River Region. Also, the importance of environment and geography builds a new platform for studying Yangtze River Urban Environment.

About IUE
The Institute of Urban Environment (IUE), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established on July 4, 2006. IUE, as a national institute, is the only research institute engaged in comprehensive studies on urban environment in the world. It has the right to confer master and doctorial degrees in Environmental Sciences. It is located in Xiamen, a beautiful city in southeast China.
IUE is a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary institution engaged in fundamental and applied research on the cutting edge of environmental and resource sciences, as well as the development of high-tech for environmental remediation and waste management, encompassing the impacts of urbanization on ecosystems and social economy, the structures, processes, functions and patterns of urban ecosystems, the relationship between urban environmental quality and ecosystem/human health, and innovative integration of technologies and instruments for the control and remediation of water, soil, air, and solid waste pollution.In addition, IUE also focuses on the integration of technologies and project demonstration for combined pollution control and remediation in regional environments, innovative technologies related to ecological industry, cleaner production and circular economy, risk assessment and management of environmental pollution in urban centers, long-term environmental measurement and field studies, theories and technologies of urban environmental planning, ecological function and regional safety in urban centers, and the theory and application of environmental management and policy.
By 2013, IUE has four Research Centers for Urban Ecology and Health, Urban Pollution Control and Restoration, Urban Environmental Engineering and Circular Economy, and Urban Environmental Planning and Management.In addition, IUE has a Technical Support Center consisting of Divisions of Scientific Instruments, a Centre for Computation and Environmental Modeling, a Library, a Network Center.
As of 2013, IUE has made achievements in many fundamental research areas, covering 60 research projects and with research funding up to 110 million RMB. It has 26 authorized national patents and published 609 SCI papers at national and international levels.
IUE’s workforce will consist of 760 people, including 410 staff, 300 graduates, as well as 50 adjunct scholars and postdoctoral fellows. IUE possesses a group of internally renowned principal investigators, among whom two were granted the Outstanding Young Scientists from the Natural Science Foundation of China, and eight were recruited through the “Hundred Talent Program” of CAS, and two were awarded the title of “National Young Scientists”, and some of them serve in international societies and journal editorial boards.
IUE conducts frequent exchanges and maintains close cooperation with many high-level research institutes in the USA, UK, Germany, France, Japan, Canada, Australia, Netherlands, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan. IUE has also signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Aberdeen of UK, the University of Florida and the State University of New Jersey, USA, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and so on.
IUE hosts the Center for International Cooperation in Science and Technology, approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China. It houses Xiamen Public Service R&D Center of Biological Industry Technology, approved by the National Development and Reform Commission of the People’s Republic of China, Key Lad of Urban Environment and Health of CAS, and Xiamen Engineering Center for Water Safety and Water Quality.
In Oct, 2013, Prof. ZHU Yongguan won the 2013 TWAS Prize in Agricultural Sciences for his systematic contribution to the understanding of arsenic dynamics in soil-plant systems, and mitigation of arsenic pollution, particularly in rice.
IUE grounds cover 13 hectares and its buildings have a floor area of 60,000 square meters. Investments totaling 140 million RMB have provided IUE with a full range of advanced instruments and equipment to support its research work.
Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences (SAES) was established in 1979, subordinated to Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau, is a comprehensive research institution.

In May 2004, approved by China National Accreditation Board of Laboratories, Environmental Testing Lab obtained “Accreditation Certificate”, the accredited capacities and scope including 168, among the 396 detectable items, 58 concerning environmental quality standards and pollutants discharged standards. The laboratory has served environmental background quality investigation of investment projects for Dupont (U.S.), Rhone-Poulenc (France), Rhodia, SNPE, Panasonic etc. and obtained well appraisal.

Leading development of propaganda, training and accrediting on ISO14000 system in 1997.In 1998, Shanghai Huanke Environmental Certification Co.，Ltd. first approved by the State. The company has provided environmental certification and relevant technical services for hundreds of enterprises, including different sectors of international companies and domestic enterprises.
In the field of pollution control, SAES has powerful technical backup in research, designing and engineering, and has undertaken on design and construction of up to a hundred projects, involving chemical industry, fine chemical industry, printing and dyeing, food, pharmaceutical industry, etc.
Environmental Products Quality Supervision & Inspection Center’s qualifications range in 5 series, 34 kinds of environmental protecting products and 75 single items related with environmental quality and environmental protecting products.
