On May 18th, the school collaborated with the Greening Department of Xuhui District to carry out “Exploring Forest Elves” and “Fond Memories of the South” park-themed extension research and learning activities in the Kangjian Park and Guilin Park, respectively. These activities explored more creative ways to open up science popularization and Jiangnan culture, promoting cultural penetration into hearts and lives. More than 300 people from surrounding communities, schools, and related media came to participate.
Why can birds fly? At the Kangjian Park, a simple and easy to understand lecture on “Our Birds Friends Around Us” attracted nearly 20 parent-child families. Professor Jiang Weibin from the SHNU School of Life Sciences showcased various bird pictures and videos taken during bird watching through a large number of illustrated children's picture books, leading children to understand the cute creatures around us, talk about birds’ habits, and experience the beauty of floating feathers.
At Kangjian Park’s wetland reserve, where the grass grows and the birds fly, Professor Jiang and his graduate team lead children to learn how to use professional telescopes to identify various common bird species in Shanghai, such as the pearl necked dove, heron, and blackbird, watching their graceful flight and perching postures. During the activity, the children listened attentively to the explanation and enjoyed the pleasure of bird watching, and even eagerly answered quiz questions about bird species they had just learned.
This activity is a science popularization and practical research activity organized by the school, relying on the professional resources of the SHNU School of Life Sciences, and combined with the theme of International Biodiversity Day. The aim is to help children understand the importance of biodiversity for the ecological environment through bird watching, and to start from oneself, love and protect birds, and jointly protect our beautiful home.
