Saskia Sassen, famous scholar of Global Cities and professor of Sociology from University of Columbia, was invited to speak at Waibinlou of SHNU on April 2nd. As one of the most active experts in the field of globalization and global cities, Sassen is also the visiting scholar of LSE, and a member of Council on Foreign Relations of America and National Academy of Science. She published The Global City in 1991 and first mentioned the concept of global cities before she promoted it and won widespread recognition.
The theme of the report is Cities in Transition: Power, Environment, and Society, which falls into several parts: intermediation and financialized trend of present global economy and explain the exploit logic of global cities.
After that, Sassen discussed some hot issues with SHNU teachers and students.
