SHNU now has two campuses, Xuhui and Fengxian, covering an area of over 1, 550, 000 square meters (about 383 acres), 93, 000 square meters (about 23 acres) of classroom area, 299, 000 square meters (about 74 acres) of students dorm, and 72, 000 square meters (about 17.8 acres) of lab and self-learning room.

The two campus libraries boast 3.5 million books, about 100 electronic library data bases and 8 characteristic data bases. The Shanghai University Ceramics Museum founded in SHNU is among one of the 10 largest of its kind in Shanghai. It has been named the title of China National Key Protection Site by the State Council of China for its storage of over 180, 000 ancient books with 1, 350 kinds of ancient rare books. It was awarded National Key Protection Institution of Ancient Records in 2009. Moreover, the Shanghai Ceramics Arts Museum being constructed in SHNU becomes one of the 10 largest university folk culture libraries of Shanghai. The sum value of fixed assets in SHNU is 2.403 billion Yuan RMB (about 349 million USD), and 644 million Yuan RMB (about 93.5 million USD) for education and scientific equipment.

Located in the metropolis Shanghai, SHNU boasts special features and strength in international cooperation and exchanges. By March 2016, the university has established links with about 311 universities and educational institutions in 40 countries and regions, including Harvard University, Waseda University, French National Academy of Science, Brazil National Academy of Science, etc. The SHNU has established cooperative and exchange relations with 7 universities from the US, UK, Germany, Netherlands, Russia, and France for 10 programs. Furthermore, SHNU has been quite active in promoting Chinese language learning in foreign countries by founding three Confucius Institutes Overseas in Japan, Botswana and US. There are now more than 21, 000 undergraduates, 7, 000 postgraduates,
2,100 overseas students  and 13, 000 night school students now learning in SHNU.

For more than 60 years since the founding of the university, SHNU has cultivated 200,000 talents of various domains, and almost 70 percent of teachers and headmasters of the primary and middle schools in Shanghai are SHNU alumni. Among them, Tang Shengchang, Liu Jinghai, Qiu Zhonghai, and Ye Peiyu have been claimed as Prestigious Contributor of Shanghai Education, Wu Xiaozhong and Gao Runhua have been awarded the titles of Outstanding National School Headmasters, and Tong Yingying and Zhang Yuqing have won the titles of Shanghai Pioneer of Teaching Morals. In September 2007, President Jinping Xi visited SHNU and inspected the teachers and stduents and hoped that the university could stick to teacher education and become the training base for high-quality basic education teachers.

SHNU boasts a high-quality academic staff of 2,915 teachers and researchers, including 1,831 full-time teachers, among which there are 300 professors (or equivalents) and 667 associate professors (or equivalentsl). Among the faculty members, 1,596 (86.1%) are master’s or doctor’s degree holders, among whom 948 are doctoral degree holders. In addition, the university has about 500 part-time teachers.

At present the university confers doctorate degrees in 6 first-level disciplines,46 second-level disciplines, and  runs 9 post-doctoral research stations, and grants master degrees in 29 first-level disciplines and 159 second-level disciplines and has 13 profession-related master’s degrees. Comparative literature and world literature is the national key discipline of SHNU. The SHNU African Studies Center is a research and development base of China Ministry of Education. The SHNU Resource Chemistry Lab is a key lab of China Ministry of Education and a collaborative lab of international cooperation. The SHNU Urban culture, SHNU computing science, SHNU comparative linguistics and SHNU International Comparative Education are the four Shanghai E-research institutes founded in SHNU.

There are 6 first-class disciplines for Universities in Shanghai, 14 Shanghai Key disciplines, 16 Key Disciplines of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, 1 Shanghai Key Innovation Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of Universities in Shanghai, 2 Shanghai Key Labs, 2 Key Labs of Universities in Shanghai, 1Wisdom Base of Universities in Shanghai and 1 Shanghai Cooperative Innovation Center. The SHNU boasts 11 programs (ranking No. 2 among Shanghai universities) for National Peak and Plateau Project, including Chinese language and literature, mathematics, and pedagogy, etc.  In recent years, SHNU has won 14 key bidding programs for National Social Sciences Funds, topping all the other local teacher education colleges across China. In the latest QS world university rankings, 9 disciplines of SHNU have been listed as world's first class. The number of listed disciplines ranks 8th among universities in Shanghai. According to the ESI for Chinese universities released in May 2016, the SHNU ranks 85th in China.

SHNU teachers have also played an active part in national and social events, such as the research of spacecrafts, training of teachers from middle and primary schools, education cooperation with rural and suburban elementary schools, and the design of Chinese and African Museum for Shanghai World Expo etc.

The biannual SHNU International Arts Festival staged a unique cultural ambience.

SHNU boasts students' symphony troupe, chorus group, dancing team and drama association, loving care school, Xuesihu BBS, students’ democratic management program, covering the fields of literature, arts, social and natural sciences.
