SHNU: Wang Kefei, professor of Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) and chief editor of Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, gave a lecture on “topic selecting and paper writing” to teachers and students of SHNU Foreign Languages College on November 26. This belongs to the 21st Huaying Forum of the college.

Prof. Wang introduced the three steps of writing a paper, that is, topic selection and research, editing and proofreading, and information and communication. According to him, for writing a paper, research is the foundation, topic the key and information the method. Doing researches requires a lot of reading, not only textbooks but also famous international treatises.

Wang pointed out that to select a proper topic we should have good academic accumulation and judgment. He also shared a list of valuable periodicals and magazines and provided methods to get different materials and data. He put forward the “3Ws” in proofreading a paper—whether enough famous treatises are included in the References, whether the paper is innovative, and whether the arguments have been well proved. During the question-and-answer session, both teachers and students present were active to ask questions, and Prof. Wang patiently gave each question a satisfying reply.

The 3-hour lecture came to an end in the prolonged applause. “The lecture benefits me greatly and gives inspiration to my academic research and paper writing,” a teacher said.
